A new Danish friend and I were savoring a bottle of Portuguese wine in the golden afternoon sunshine when he shared a profound truth: “The law of the Camino gift is that your being increases inasmuch as you give it away.”
This simple wisdom resonates everywhere on the Camino. Those who give themselves freely—offering their love, sharing without expectation—are invariably the most joyful souls you’ll encounter. I witness this daily as pilgrims readily offer directions, attentive ears, a glass of wine, or hard-earned trail wisdom to fellow travelers.
This generosity of spirit is why I cherish walking the Camino. Everyone embodies this giving nature, radiating happiness even through blistered feet and aching muscles. You won’t find grumpy pilgrims here—only patient, kind, and loving companions on the journey.
My first day walking from Porto challenged me with its urban sprawl, yet I relished every step. When I briefly lost the trail, a friendly local immediately pointed me back toward the path. Now I’m resting after a hot shower, freshly washed clothes, and wine shared with new friends—feeling wonderfully light and content.
Tomorrow brings nearly 20 miles to Barcelos, a town renowned for its ceramics and pottery. I plan to walk more slowly, savoring each moment of this beautiful journey where giving and receiving flow as naturally as the path beneath our feet.
